An extremely unusual and rare double bed frame finished in a satin black colour. The bed is of European origin and dates from around 1930's and is known as the "bentwood" design.
The bed was designed by Michael Thonet who was most famous for the production of cafe chairs. He was born in 1796 in Boppard/Rhine, where he opened his own workshop in 1819. In 1842 Prince Metternich summoned him to Vienna. Together with his sons he founded a company in 1849. Michael Thonet died in Vienna in 1871; his sons then took over the company.
During the 1930s, Thonet was committed to the construction and technology of tubular steel furniture and quickly became the largest manufacturer in the world. World War II represented a harsh caesura: the plants in the eastern regions were disowned.
The bed comes complete with a firm bed base which is in two parts (so easy to get up the stairs) and the frame will accept a standard double mattress. You can also order a mattress from us - we can make the mattress and bed base in the same matching fabric for you.
